In 1993, MTN a fledgling entrant in the South African telecommunications arena, found itself facing a formidable challenge: how to carve out a distinct identity and win over customers in a market dominated by a well-established competitor. The task was daunting but the solution, as it turned out, was hiding in plain sight – a vibrant, optimistic colour that would soon become synonymous with the brand.
When MTN partnered with advertising agency Hunt Lascaris, a young and ambitious client services manager named Dané Osborne saw an opportunity she couldn't resist. She recognised the immense potential of working on a new brand in a burgeoning market and was determined to be part of the team that would shape its future. ‘This was a once-in-a-career opportunity,’ Dané recalls. ‘You very seldom get the chance to work on a whole new client with a whole new brand in a whole new market space; I wanted in.’ Her enthusiasm and determination convinced the agency to entrust her with the project if they won the MTN account.
The Hunt Lascaris team, with Dané at the helm, embarked on a creative journey to define MTN's brand identity. They were given complete freedom to explore ideas and concepts – a ‘blank canvas on which to work,’ as Dané describes it. However, translating that blank canvas into a tangible visual representation proved to be a challenge.
Initial logo concepts featuring a red, black, and grey colour scheme that failed to capture the essence of the brand. ‘It looked like a car product; motor oil or something,’ Dané recounts. Undeterred, she tapped into her background in graphic design and her understanding of colour psychology to find a more suitable solution.
Dané envisioned a blue oval badge with a dominant yellow surround. Yellow, she believed, was the perfect colour to embody the brand's values and aspirations. ‘My thinking was that yellow was warm, approachable... think sunshine and daisies,’ she explains. ‘It gave the brand an immediate visual differentiation and high noticeability. And it popped with promise.’
The new yellow MTN look was an instant success. It resonated with consumers, conveying warmth, optimism, and innovation. It quickly became a recognisable symbol of the brand, differentiating MTN from its competitors and establishing a unique identity in the marketplace.
The collaboration between MTN and Hunt Lascaris deepened, with a dedicated ‘war room’ established at the agency to facilitate seamless communication and collaboration. The team, led by marketing head Steve Goodey, worked tirelessly, often putting in long hours, to ensure the successful launch and promotion of the new brand.
Their efforts bore fruit, as MTN's yellow branding quickly captured the attention and affection of South Africans. The company's advertising campaigns, often infused with humour and heart, resonated with consumers from all walks of life. These campaigns not only garnered numerous awards but, more importantly, won over the hearts and minds of the South African people.
Today, MTN stands as a telecommunications giant, not just in South Africa, but across the African continent. Over three decades later, MTN's iconic yellow logo remains as vibrant and relevant as ever. It is instantly recognisable in 19 countries, serving over 280 million subscribers, from the bustling streets of Johannesburg to urban centres and the remote villages of rural Africa. MTN's yellow has transcended its original purpose as a brand colour and has become a symbol of connectivity, progress and hope. It represents a company that has not only transformed the telecommunications landscape but has also played a pivotal role in driving economic growth and social development across the region.
For Dané Osborne, the woman behind the iconic yellow, it is a source of immense pride and satisfaction. ‘I had no idea what I was getting into back in 1993 when I insisted on working on the MTN account,’ she reflects. Since then, she has become an integral part of the MTN family, holding various senior roles within the company. She continues to be passionate about the brand and its ability to ‘truly make lives brighter’.
MTN's yellow is a legacy of sunshine that has transcended borders and cultures. It is a symbol of hope, optimism, and the unwavering belief in a brighter future for all. It reminds us that with a little bit of creativity, courage, and a whole lot of yellow, even the biggest challenges can be overcome.
It is a testament to the power of branding to not only create a recognisable identity but also inspire and uplift people, fostering connection and progress across vast and diverse landscapes. It serves as a reminder of the potential for positive change and the importance of embracing bold, innovative ideas.
