For all of its history, MTN has been at pains to install and run the best networks. Back in 1998, we set out to prove it by enlisting independent researcher Instrumach to conduct a head-to-head network comparison. Who better to oversee this critical test than the renowned consumer journalist, Michael Jackson? (Yes, really).
Mr Jackson… no relation, compensated for his time by MTN, declared the tests "the most comprehensive comparative testing I have ever undertaken in seeking to protect the consumers' interests." The verdict was clear: MTN's network reigned supreme.
When our competitor pooh-poohed the results and declined a jointly supervised rematch, we knew we had to step up our game. We brought in five top journalists (including Jackson) and the former chairwoman of the Housewives' League to oversee another round of testing by Instrumach - this time, the trials were 'controlled' by auditors KPMG. Once again, MTN's network came out on top, boasting the lowest congestion and dropped-call rates, along with the best voice quality. We couldn't resist celebrating with a cheeky advertorial: "What everyone is talking about – MTN, the best connection."
However, this particular spat was to rumble on. And on. Our rival wasn't ready to concede defeat. Accusations flew, alleging sabotage and helicopter interference. The rival claimed that MTN had hired helicopters to follow the test vehicle and disrupt their signal. KPMG, taken aback by these allegations, withdrew its endorsement of the tests. MTN maintained that we had only hired security to ensure fair play and prevent any tampering with the tests.
Amid the uproar, the Financial Mail weighed in, suggesting that the tests might have been more about appeasing shareholders than benefiting consumers. This speculation was rooted in MTN's recent financial move to buy out Southwestern Bell Corporation's (SBC) 15% stake for a hefty R1.7 billion. Despite this, the Financial Mail also noted the questionable legitimacy of our rival's own award, pointing out that it was based on a survey of only 30 industry insiders.
Determined to settle the matter once and for all, MTN turned to the CSIR for an unbiased analysis. The CSIR's thorough examination confirmed there was no evidence of external interference, vindicating MTN's commitment to fairness and transparency. This independent validation further cemented our dedication to quality, exemplified by our ISO 9001 certification—the only cellular company in the southern hemisphere to hold this prestigious accolade at the time.
Fast forward to 2024, and MTN's dedication to superior network quality remains unshaken. The MyBroadband Insights Mobile Network Quality Report reaffirms MTN's position as South Africa's top mobile network. Based on 285,839 speed tests conducted by 7,197 mobile data users between 1 January and 31 March 2024, the report highlighted South Africa's average mobile download speed at 66.82Mbps. MTN led the pack with an impressive average download speed of 82.48Mbps, significantly outpacing our nearest contender.
